Wildlife Hospital 

A Wildlife Hospital Volunteer assists staff with the rehabilitation of injured and orphaned native wildlife. Volunteers typically work one 4 hour weekly shift with another volunteer (1-4 volunteers per shift), and work under the supervision of the Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation. This role is mainly husbandry based, including but not limited to cleaning, diet preparation, handling and restraint of wildlife for procedures, and assisting with procedures as the volunteer becomes more experienced. Volunteers may also be asked to perform some administrative tasks as needed (stocking supplies, inputting data, updating medical charts, etc.). Hospital volunteers must be over the age of 18.

Wildlife Rescue/Transport

Wildlife Rescue and Transport Volunteers assist staff with the rescue and transport of injured and orphaned native-Oregon wildlife. Wildlife that is injured and in need of rescuing requires an individual to go out and capture that animal and then bring it to the appropriate facility for care. This may include the Think Wild hospital, local, specialized wildlife rehabbers or a local veterinary clinic. In some instances, the animal may already be captured and just need transport. This position is extremely flexible depending on the volunteers availability and areas they are willing to transport to/from. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or have a parent or guardian when volunteering.

Humane Wildlife Conflict Services

Volunteers in our new humane wildlife conflict services program will assist our Wildlife Field Services Coordinator, Nick, with diverse consulting projects pertaining to local wildlife conflicts in the Central Oregon community. Volunteers can expect to assist with nest box and perch construction and installation for various native bird species, with a variety of exclusion and mitigation projects, with fencing issues, among other tasks as they become necessary. This position would likely be a good fit for individuals that are eager to work outside and are interested in helping to prevent wildlife euthanasia.

Beaver Habitat Projects

Willow Harvest (easy) - help harvest willow and aspen sticks from sites near Bend. Harvested sticks will be planted at our new nursery site in Clarno for long-term propagation of beaver food and building materials. 

Clarno Nursery Work (easy-medium) - assist with planting or harvesting of willow and aspen from our new nursery site in Clarno, Oregon. These harvested sticks will be planted during our spring habitat projects later this season to improve wildlife habitat along key riparian corridors. Clarno Nursery is right on the John Day River and only a few miles away from John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. 

Planting Projects (medium-strenuous) - participate in one- or two-day projects on remote sites in Central and Eastern Oregon. Plant willow and aspen sticks to provide food and building materials that will support beaver success along streams.

Construction and Maintenance

Think Wild is always in need of handy volunteers with skills in construction, contracting, carpentry, metal-work, electrical wiring, plumbing, and more. We are in the process of building small and large outdoor wildlife enclosures, and the more help with these, the better! We can provide materials and projects on-site or for you to do at home. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or have a parent or guardian when volunteering.

Yard Work and Gardening

It is a priority for Think Wild to keep our property looking professional and tidy. We could use weekly or monthly help with light gardening, yard care, landscaping, etc., especially during the Spring and Summer. We are also planning to develop an educational native pollinator garden next year, so we would love volunteer help in planning and implementing this project! Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or have a parent or guardian when volunteering.

Education and Outreach

K-12 Education Volunteer - supports Think Wild education programming on-site at Think Wild or in classroom programs.

Summer Camp - assists with delivery of summer camp curriculum at different sites around Central Oregon. 

Tabling and Outreach - works at Think Wild and other community events to promote wildlife conservation messaging. 

Curriculum Development - improves on existing curriculum and creates new lessons and inquiry-based learning opportunities for community and K-12 education programming.

Maybe you have a network of animal enthusiasts that would like to get involved, have fundraising ideas or just love event planning. If you are interested in helping Think Wild plan Fundraising and/or Virtual Events, we would love your help!

At Home Projects

We have a variety of at-home projects available depending on your skills. This could include sewing mammal hammocks, creating mobile duck boxes, building skunk exercise wheels, and more!
